A very interesting topic, well summarized and presented, and the subject of continued speculation 2000 years later. Fortunately you can find definitive answers to all questions raised here in my novel The Acts of Simon Magus in the First Century AD, Book I of which is now available on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/Acts-Simon-Magus-First-Century-ebook/dp/B01CYUMNIK. It explores the intertwined destinies of Christianity, Gnosticism and Hermeticism through the eyes of the first great Christian super-villain. If you find it intriguing, I would be glad to provide a review copy. I’d love to get the reaction of a fellow explorer in these realms.
