The relationship between Gnosticism and occultism is a complex one. Many modern Gnostics, although certainly not all, are also practicing occultists and many episodes of Talk Gnosis have focused on a variety of esoteric and magical topics.

For this episode, we welcomed Mitch Horowitz, former publishing executive, historian of the Occult, and author of several books on the occult and new religious movements. As is often the case, Father Tony and Rev. Mr. Jonathan had a lot of questions for our guest, and topics ranged from the Christian occultism of New Thought to the works of filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan.

Still, the conversation kept looping back to the idea that spiritual practice, even esotericism, ought to be practical, it ought to be able to help people to do, and be, better. The conversation then segued into conspiracy theories, and the rather bleak thinking that accompanies them.
